Sports

Sports at Alvirne have always played a role in most students' lives. Traditional sports such as baseball, basketball, and soccer were always offered, as well as the cross country/track and field program. I don't know when softball, tennis or volleyball started to be offered. Football was offered beginning in the 1994-95 school year, and hockey was offered beginning with the 2004-05 school year. The Bronco cheerleaders have always energized our audience and the players. Team rosters can be found on the Athletics section of the Alvirne website or for prior rosters, in yearbooks.

Karen Bonney has been a long-time fixture in the Alvirne athletic program. She originally started at Alvirne in 1985 as a gym teacher and coached various athletic teams before becoming the Athletic Director in 2000 after Clyde Meyerhoefer's departure. She has always tried to set up Alvirne athletic programs for maximum success by giving them the resources they need, and for students who don't participate in athletics, she has overseen the Physical Education department and provided opportunities in that field as well.

Alvirne Football is arguably the most popular sport at Alvirne. Many students go to the games to see our Broncos face off against other teams in Friday Night Lights. Even if our team loses a game that night, students still enjoy coming together and supporting our fellow Bronco athletes and it provides an opportunity for fellowship.

Athletics really isn't my field, so if you think a major athletic event should be listed here, please let me know, or if your team has a website. If I get pictures of major athletic events, I'll put them in.
